This project is a part of n-vestigate.
n-vestigate is a project by n-ost and four other research networks from Armenia, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. These organizations make up the foundation of a new network that implements cooperative, transnational research and strengthens the communal anchoring of investigative journalism in the region.
Who does the country’s largest bank belong to? What is the top product among the list of goods smuggled across the EU’s borders? What does the president’s diary look like?
Whether it’s an analysis of open data or a Freedom of Information request, journalistic research is often limited by both language barriers and state borders—corruption, illegal business and environmental crimes, however, don’t stop at border crossings. The global dimension of these illegal activities make them extremely difficult to track.
n-vestigate enables journalists from six regions to engage in transnational research by setting up a network of stakeholders from within the aforementioned countries, as well as Russia and the EU. Together, they’ll design investigative research projects which consider an array of multifaceted perspectives and which aim at creating a forum for globalized storytelling.
Especially considering the current tensions between Russia and the EU, and how a souring relationship affects the entire region, in-depth, transnational investigations have become even more important. Journalists cooperate based on their profound local expertise, going far beyond preconceived stereotypes and assumptions. n-vestigate! provides a broader range of perspectives from neighboring countries, thus allowing for political analysis far beyond the scope of possibility for regional media outlets.
n-vestigate invites regional decision makers into the network, thus allowing the project to reach into society and to initiate worthwhile follow-up conversations after the publication of a particular article. We work together with journalists, media lawyers, think tanks, transparency activists and others towards catalyzing sustainable societal transformation.
